If you're Catholic, you belong to the largest Pentecostal Church in the world...

As a teen, I thought the clergy were supposed to do everything. We laity were just called to pray, pay, and obey.? Oh yes, and keep the commandments, of course.? The original 10 seemed overwhelming enough.? Then I discovered the Sermon on the Mount and nearly passed out.

Perhaps this is why many inactive Catholics are so resentful of their upbringing in the Church.?? For them, religion means frustration, failure, and guilt.

Somehow they, and I, missed the good news about Pentecost.? OK, we Catholics celebrate the feast every year and mention it in Confirmation class, but lots of us evidently didn?t ?get it.?

Because if we ?got it,? we?d be different . . . bold instead of timid, energetic instead of anemic, fascinated instead of bored.?? Compare the apostles before and after Pentecost and you?ll see the difference the Spirit makes.

The gospel is Good News not just because we?re going to heaven, but because we?ve been empowered to become new people, here and now.? Vatican II insisted that each of us is called to the heights of holiness (Lumen Gentium, chapter V).? Not by will-power, mind you.? But by Holy Spirit power. Holiness consists in faith, hope, and especially divine love.? These are ?virtues,? literally ?powers,? given by the Spirit.? To top it off, the Spirit gives us seven further gifts which perfect faith, hope, and love, making it possible for us to live a supernatural, charismatic life.? Some think this is only for the chosen few, ?the mystics.?? Thomas Aquinas taught to the contrary that the gifts of Isaiah 11:1-3 (wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, piety, fortitude, and fear of the Lord) are standard equipment given in baptism, that all are called to be ?mystics.?

Vatican II also taught that every Christian has a vocation to serve.? We need power for this too.? And so the Spirit distributes other gifts, called ?charisms.?? These, teaches St. Thomas, are not so much for our own sanctification as for service to others.? There is no exhaustive list of charisms, though St. Paul mentions a few (I Corinthians 12:7-10, Romans 12:6-8) ranging from tongues to Christian marriage (1 Corinthians7: 7).? Charisms are not doled out by the pastors; but are given directly by the Spirit through baptism and confirmation, even sometimes outside of the sacraments (Acts 10:44-48).

Do I sound Pentecostal?? That?s because I belong to the largest Pentecostal Church in the world.? Correcting the mistaken notion that the charisms were just for the apostolic church, Vatican II had this to say: ?Allotting His gifts ?to everyone according as he will? (1 Cor. 12:11), He [the Holy Spirit] distributes special graces among the faithful of every rank. . . . These charismatic gifts, whether they be the most outstanding or the more simple and widely diffused, are to be received with thanksgiving and consolation, for they are exceedingly suitable and useful for the needs of the Church? (LG12).

Powerful gifts, freely given to all.? Sounds like a recipe for chaos.? But the Lord also imparted to the apostles and their successors a unifying charism of headship.? The role of the ordained is not to do everything themselves.? Rather, they are to discern, shepherd, and coordinate the charisms of the laity so that they mature and work together for the greater glory of God (LG 30).

So what if you, like me, did not quite ?get it? when you were confirmed??? I?ve got good news for you.? You actually did get the Spirit and his gifts.?? Have you ever received a new credit card with a sticker saying ?Must call to activate before using??? The Spirit and his gifts are the same way.? You have to call in and activate them.?? Do it today and every day, and especially every time you attend Mass.? Because every sacramental celebration is a New Pentecost where the Spirit and his gifts are poured out anew (CCC 739, 1106).

That?s why the Christian Life is an adventure.? There will always be new surprises of the Spirit!

Six Afghan children killed in NATO air strike

May 22: Rachel Maddow reports on the headlines from the NATO summit in Chicago, including supply routes to Afghanistan through Pakistan.

By Atia Abawi, NBC News in Kabul, and msnbc.com staff

KABUL - Eight civilians in one family, including six children, were killed in a NATO air strike after a field operation in Paktia province, local government officials told NBC News.

The incident took place at 8pm on Saturday in the Garda Serrai district, according the Paktia government spokesman Rohullah Samoon.

They were all members of one family, he said.

NATO said told NBC News it was taking the reports of the incident seriously and was investigating.

Samoon told Reuters said the air strike was not coordinated with Afghan security forces on the ground in the area.

Civilian casualties have been a major source of friction between President Hamid Karzai's government and U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan, Reuters reported.

NATO is preparing to hand over all security responsibilities to Afghan forces and most foreign combat troops are scheduled to leave the country by the end of 2014.

Maintain Your Golf cheap jerseys Swing In Shape All Calendar year ...

Some PGA Tour players have already been playing for a couple of weeks in Hawaii and California. Others like Vijay and Ernie happen to be taking part in within the cheap jerseys European Tour. Regardless of how several tournaments the professionals have performed this yr, they have been operating on their games for a lot more time than the majority of us understand. Make no error regarding it: in golfing or baseball, football, basketball or almost every other professional activity there is absolutely no lengthier an off-season.

So whilst this may well be the initial official shot of the time for many, the instruction procedure to acquire prepared to make that shot continues to be quietly going on for months.

The newbie can learn a great offer from the expert golfer. Lots of components in the planet it is not achievable to perform golf 12 months around, but you can find strategies cheap jerseys to help keep your golfing video game in shape all year lengthy. Professionals know the way to get it done and so can you.

Realistically, there is certainly very little time to take a break and do definitely nothing for specialist golfers. Whilst every single pro is distinct, there?s a generic formula most will comply with. Following the pro finishes his last golf tournament, they consider a little break. A handful of weeks off to give the physique cheap jerseys and thoughts a little rest. Each and every pro athlete wants that time to just recharge and provides the body both physically and also mentally time to recover. The PGA Tour year is one in the longest in sports and even though they may well not play every single week, its pretty taxing on the physique and also the time off is critical to ensure good results when we begin coaching for the next time.

I would advocate precisely the same recipe for your amateur. Regardless in case you are in a position to perform calendar year around or not, take a period of time of at the least 2 weeks to put the golfing clubs in the closet. The break absent from your recreation will do miracles. You might even uncover immediately after you return you?re playing much better golfing and shooting lower scores.

Subsequent the remainder time and like I stated, its longer for many, shorter for others its time for the tour participant to begin ramping up for the next time by physically improving the parameters in the physique for that approaching yr. cheap jerseys Similar to any other golfer from the Sunday hacker towards the scratch golfer to the club professional the expert golfer will function on looking to improve versatility, balance, energy, endurance and energy.

The amateur for the duration of this time of the calendar year (ordinarily the winter when snow is around the floor) can implement a golfing fitness plan. A golf conditioning system will entail producing the physical capacities of the body around the golfing swing. The system will appear to create overall flexibility, balance, power, endurance, and energy in relation to the golf swing. This really is the initial stage for your beginner to trying to keep their golfing swing in shape all year extended.

The newbie during this time of 12 months may also implement swing drills into their instruction plan. The qualified could or could not integrate swing drills into their program at the moment calendar year. But for the newbie I suggest it, why This really is the time of 12 months also to producing cheap jerseys the physique for the golfing swing. The amateur can work on swing faults that hindered their scores the previous year.

The swing drills is often basically performing mirror drills to work on posture and also the phases with the golfing swing.

You need to begin placing drills this time of the yr. Should you be lucky adequate to reside inside an area you could perform golfing calendar year around, a few brief sessions in the selection every single week is really a fantastic concept. I would recommend the selection sessions be kept brief and focused on fixing the problem regions within your golfing swing. The significant point may be the off-season is actually a time the amateur can benefit from working on each their bodies and their golfing swing

Professionally when the PGA Tour time strategies, we start what is essentially the preseason. This really is when the player begins to apply the basic mechanics of the sport. If its a golfer, hes around the assortment operating on his swing, if its a pitcher, hes throwing getting prepared for spring training. Bodily, were still coaching the physique, but we tone it down when the participant good tunes his sport. But make no mistake about it, even though working within the golf match is 75 % of the focus of this pre-season training program, were nonetheless working on the fundamentals of versatility, balance, strength, endurance and energy training.

The pre-season for the novice marks time of yr when the snow is beginning to melt along with the itch to play golfing happens around. I?d suggest the newbie follow a related program as the professional in the course of this time of yr. Get started spending additional time in the variety. Working on all aspects of one?s golfing video game. Carry on with your golf health system, but you may desire to back off it slightly because of the increased apply time. Once more, maintain in thoughts the body swings the golf club and we should preserve the body in shape to do so.

The pre-season plan of elevated golf apply and also a tiny less golf fitness carries on with the professional golfer until their very first tournament. This marks the point once we shift to an in-season golf conditioning program. The golfing health exercises dont cease, but we back off within the intensity. The program doesnt adjust much. Were still focused on versatility, balance, energy, endurance and power, however the quantity or quantity of operate is much less to support the bodily and psychological strain of competition.

Four days of tournament perform may take a toll around the physique. Consequently, we have to again off around the quantity of golfing physical fitness coaching. The amateur throughout the golf time is most likely in a small diverse of the scenario. They may be most likely not playing 4 aggressive rounds of golf per week additionally apply. At most, they may possibly be taking part in 2-3 rounds each week having a few practice sessions. Because of the reduce volumes of golf they are able to devote just a little more quantity of time with their golfing health and fitness plan.

Essentially, the newbie can fairly substantially adhere to pre-season quantity of golfing physical fitness instruction unless they are playing rather a little. Just make sure the right stability of golfing health and fitness coaching is in spot in relation for your golfing practice and playing. This is essential so that you usually do not physically over-tax the body. Bottom line should you be looking to keep your golf sport in shape and improving 12 months around, I advise adhering to what the pros do; take a break in the end of the year, carry out a golf health and fitness program, work in your swing faults for the duration of the winter months, boost your follow time at the selection prior to the period, and throughout the season keep a fantastic stability of playing, practicing, and working out.

Inherited DNA change explains overactive leukemia gene

  • An overactive BAALC gene in acute leukemia cells identifies patients whose disease is likely to respond poorly to standard therapy.
  • This study discovered why the gene is often overactive.
  • The findings may provide a prognostic marker that can help guide therapy in these patients.

COLUMBUS, Ohio A small inherited change in DNA is largely responsible for overactivating a gene linked to poor treatment response in people with acute leukemia.

The study by researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC James) focused on a gene called BAALC. This gene is often overactive, or overexpressed, in people with acute myeloid or acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and it indicates that the disease is likely to respond poorly to standard therapy.

This study discovered that BAALC overexpression is caused by a small change called a single nucleotide polymorphism, or SNP (pronounced "snip") in the gene's DNA. The SNP alters the gene's "On" switch, allowing a different molecule to keep it "running" when it shouldn't.

"We want to emphasize," says principal investigator Dr. Albert de la Chapelle, professor of medicine, the Leonard J. Immke Jr. and Charlotte L. Immke Chair in Cancer Research, and co-leader of the Molecular Biology and Cancer Genetics Program, "that this SNP does not raise an individual's risk of developing leukemia, but it does predispose to overexpression of the BAALC gene, which is associated with leukemia development and poor response to treatment."

The findings, published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggest that this SNP could be a useful marker of prognosis and for guiding therapy in acute leukemia patients.

Specifically, the DNA change caused by the SNP creates a binding site for an activating molecule called RUNX1, which is also involved in the formation of normal and malignant blood cells. The researchers showed that patients with high levels of RUNX1 protein also had high levels of BAALC gene expression, while those with low RUNX1 protein had low BAALC gene expression.

For this study, de la Chapelle and his colleagues used DNA sequencing to examine the genomic region of BAALC in 253 patients with cytogentically normal AML (CN-AML) treated in Cancer and Leukemia Group B clinical trials. The analysis revealed nine SNPs of interest, but the researchers focused only on one called rs62527607[T] which creates a RUNX1 binding site in the BAALC promoter region.

The researchers validated the findings in 105 CN-AML patients enrolled in the German-Austrian AML Study Group trials for adult patients. The validation group findings supported the association of high BAALC expression with the SNP, and high RUNX1 expression with high BAALC expression.

"We doubt that this SNP is entirely responsible for BAALC overexpression, but we do believe it is a major contributor to the overactivity," de la Chapelle says.

Portugal adopts 4-year plan to cut state spending

LISBON, Portugal (AP) ? Portugal's Parliament has endorsed a four-year budget plan that places legal limits on state spending in an effort to restore the bailed-out country's fiscal health.

Meager growth and excessive borrowing over the past decade pushed Portugal close to bankruptcy last year, compelling it to ask for ?78 billion bailout and adding momentum to Europe's sovereign debt crisis.

The Budget Strategy Document introduces legal caps on public spending, which will be linked to forecast income. The goal is to reduce spending from the equivalent of 50 percent of gross domestic product this year to 43 percent in 2016.

Finance Minister Vitor Gaspar told lawmakers the plan is "a fundamental milestone" in Portugal's economic recovery efforts.

The government used its parliamentary majority Friday to approve the plan, which all opposition parties rejected.

Ted Moves Up to June 29 Release

Ted Release DateEXCLUSIVE: The hugely buzzed-about ?R?-rated comedy Ted was scheduled for release July 13th. But Universal execs moved quickly to grab this date now that Paramount?s G.I. Joe: Retaliation sequel moved off June 29th to add 3D. After all, the movie and campaign are ready, I?m told. Seth MacFarlane is the writer, director, producer, and voice talent behind the foul-mouthed teddy bear alongside Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. ?The movie has had so much buzz since the minute the trailers were released that we?ve been looking to see if there was an earlier date available,? a Universal insider tells me. ?It also gives us two more weeks of primetime summer. And allows for the word of mouth to build through the weeks up through Fourth Of July.? Hollywood is shocked that Paramount vacated the primo date, especially because Paramount blew a wad on a Superbowl commercial and already was starting TV and outdoor ads for GI Joe 2.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Eight months after a repeal of the military's "don't ask , don't tell" policy, the U.S. Air Force Academy today graduated its first group of openly gay cadets.

As President Obama addressed the graduates, no rainbow flags could be seen on display. The LGBT students couldn't be picked out of the crowd of white and blue.

But gay and lesbian advocates, academy alums, school officials and current students said they were there.

"The whole thing is we don't want to be identified as anything different," said Trish Heller, who heads the Blue Alliance, an association of LGBT Air Force Academy alumni. "We want to serve, to be professional and to be symbols of what it means to be Air Force Academy graduates."

Heller said her group had connected with at least four members of the class of 2012 receiving diplomas today who had come out publicly as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.? There?were ?likely others, but they preferred to keep a ?low-profile, she said.

Conversations with dozens of current academy students and some new graduates presented a picture of a smooth transition from the military's ban on openly gay service members serving to the repeal of that ban. There have been ?no major incidents of overt discrimination or harassment since the policy was repealed in September.

But many signaled the change in policy would continue to hold a tender and personal?meaning ?for those cadets who were weighing the decision to come out of the closet.

"It's? ?just been really open, a lot of acceptance. I haven't heard anyone say, 'I hate this. I can't serve in the military with this,'" said?3rd Class Cadet Kevin Wise, a second-year management major. "It's a sense of 'OK, this is their lifestyle, but they're still the person I've spent 21 credit hours a semester next to or I've gone through this with,'" he said.

Wise said he knew several classmates who chose to come out in the past few months. "Honestly, for me, it was, 'Oh well, I kind of had a suspicion since I've known you for two years now, but you just move on," he said.

"There wasn't any sort of repercussion against them or anything," said 2nd Lt. Jenny Kavalstan of her gay classmates who graduated with her today. "I thought of them the same way I did before; most people do."

Acacia Miller, a sophomore from Shreveport, La., praised the school's leadership for setting the right tone before the repeal. "They did a good job preparing us. There were lots of briefings about it. They stated how the military was going to go forward with it, how we should act. It was pretty much just like any other repeal, segregation, all that stuff. We just got told this is what's going to happen and we all need to be adults about it," she said.

Gay cadets at all the U.S. military service academies have been forming clubs and support groups, slowly making their existence known online and at campus social events. The Air Force Academy group - called Spectrum - was officially sanctioned earlier this month and had about 30 members from across all classes, the organizers said.

The Air Force Academy's administration has also allowed the Blue Alliance to have a more high-profile role on campus. The group flew rainbow flags during a tailgate party before a home football game in November, Heller said, and hosted a dinner attended by the dean of faculty, Gen. Dana Born. In February, the group participated in a campus leadership symposium, she said.

"Things have gone very smoothly at the academies since repeal," said Sue Fulton, a 1980 West Point graduate and spokeswoman for the LGBT military advocacy group OutServe.

The "don't ask, don't tell" policy was approved by President Clinton in 1993 as a compromise toward ending a long-standing ban on allowing homosexuals to serve in the military. Gay service members could enlist but had to?keep quiet about their sexual orientation.? Advocates said it essentially forced them to live a lie.

Congress passed a law in 2010 formally ordering repeal of the policy. After a period of preparation and training for lifting the ban, the Pentagon gave the green light for final certification in September 2011.

"Basically, it was just another day when DADT was repealed," said Air Force Academy spokesman John Van Winkle. "No big changes, no real growing pains.?? Most of American society has become much more accepting of the LGBT community over the years since President Clinton made the forward-thinking choice in the early '90s to go from a strict no-gay policy to DADT."

Advocates said they never believed the?repeal would prove problematic on campus, given that younger generations of students were generally more accepting of homosexuality, and the military's commitment to following the rules set by leaders.

"In dealing with cadets every day," Heller said, "the bigger issue going forward is what every kid goes through in coming out at that age - dealing with your family, coming to terms with yourself, what does it mean to me personally - that is the real focus and challenge."

International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research

Researchers at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) are celebrating today after hearing that Australia will share in hosting the world's largest telescope the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). ICRAR a joint venture between Curtin University and The University of Western Australia has been working towards the $2 billion SKA since its launch in 2009.

"We've been working very hard to make SKA a reality and we're glad to see the project reach this major milestone. ICRAR is looking forward to taking part in the next stage of the SKA through our expertise in Engineering, Information Technology and Astronomy," says ICRAR Director Professor Peter Quinn.

Two candidate sites have been bidding to host the SKA, one in Southern Africa and one in Australia and New Zealand, since 2005. It was announced earlier today by the International SKA Organisation that the SKA would be split between both sites.

Professor Quinn said sharing the SKA between Africa and Australia allows the project to benefit from the best of both sites, building on the substantial investment in infrastructure and expertise that already exists in both locations.

The new plan to share the SKA will see Australia's Mid West hosting two key components of the telescope a group of dishes equipped with Australian-designed multi-pixel radio cameras and the 'Aperture Array' portion, made up of innovative non-moving antennas designed to collect lower frequency radio waves from the whole sky.

This part of the SKA will be optimised to survey large portions of the sky quickly, a particular strength of Australian astronomy.

South Africa will host a complementary group of dish-shaped telescopes designed to observe smaller sections of the sky in more detail, following up on regions of interest discovered using the survey portion.

"This model for splitting the SKA closely follows the workings of other observatories around the world; often separate instruments will survey the sky and inform where another telescope should look closer," says Professor Quinn.

The divide also plays to the strengths of each country's site, relying on Australia's expertise developed during the design and construction of radio astronomy survey instruments, such as the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA).

ICRAR's Curtin University node is the Lead Organisation of the MWA, the only low-frequency Precursor to the SKA, and as a founding member of the predominantly European 'Aperture Array Design and Construction' consortium, ICRAR is applying its expertise to the SKA's new-generation Aperture Arrays.

"Curtin University is proud to be involved in the SKA project through our joint venture partnership in ICRAR. In particular, we are pleased that our early initiatives in the Aperture Array domain and towards the MWA have proved important in bringing the SKA to Australia. We congratulate everyone involved in the decision, and look forward to the future of this inspiring project," says Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jeanette Hacket.

ICRAR's node at The University of Western Australia has been working with international institutions to cost and develop a design for the SKA's extremely powerful computing systems.

The Vice-Chancellor of The University of Western Australia, Professor Paul Johnson, said UWA welcomed the opportunity to play a key role in this historic quest to advance human knowledge of science and the Universe. "Hosting part of the Square Kilometre Array in Western Australia will enable researchers at ICRAR's UWA node to make a significant contribution to this ground breaking telescope project. Their work on high performance computing systems for astronomy and sky surveys will help lead a dramatic advance in international astronomy using new-generation telescopes around the world."

Professor Quinn said that ICRAR is a world leader in survey science and technology in both radio and optical astronomy, and is looking forward to playing a major role in SKA surveys.

Due to the investment already present in both sites, a split SKA will be able to achieve its scientific goals without substantial added costs.

"Placing a major part of the SKA here shows international recognition of Australia's strength in radio astronomy and the high quality radio-quiet site Australia has developed in WA's Mid West," says Professor Quinn.

It also recognises the significant investment made by the WA Government, the Australian Federal Government, CSIRO, and the ICRAR joint venture partners, to turn Western Australia into a hub for world-class science and engineering. Before the SKA starts observations in 2019, the MWA and ASKAP projects, together with iVEC's new $80 million Pawsey Supercomputing Centre, and ICRAR itself, will produce excellent science on the path to the SKA.

"These global science endeavours will continue to benefit Western Australia and the international scientific community long into the future. The effort Australia and WA has made in infrastructure, legislation and policies will make the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory a significant centre for global science for decades to come," says Professor Quinn.

"As an International centre, we're eager to continue our work with colleagues in Africa and the rest of the world to build the SKA and use it to explore the Universe in 10,000 times more detail than ever before."
